Don't mistake the food at this East Harlem bistro for typical Carribbean. The cuisine of Barbados is known as Bajan, and it differentiates itself through the liberal use of thyme, garlic and other spices. You'll likely find a bit of a kick to this grub, as hot peppers are also common in the island's cooking. Don't feel too bad if you aren't familiar with the cuisine, though—this is actually the only Bajan restaurant in Manhattan (though you can find a few in Queens). The restaurant's decor also takes cues from the tropics, with steel drum music playing over the speakers and a bright color scheme that evokes the palate of Barbados. Look for signature dishes like flying fish, a native species to the waters surrounding islands and cou cou, a blend of okra, cornmeal and hot sauce. Though there are a few tables available for eating in, the spot is also great for takeout.
