Ah, more welcome proof that banh mi doesn't have a monopoly on NYC Asian sandwiches: Mantao, a Midtown reincarnation of the former Province Chinese Canteen in Tribeca. The restaurant's namesake is a kind of traditional Chinese steamed bread—soft, white and dusted with sesame seeds. Here, it resembles a mini burger bun, and it houses a variety of stuffing: black-pepper chicken, short rib and kimchi, roasted pork layered with cucumber and cilantro. At $2.50 to $4.50 per, they're also a steal. For an even better deal, go for the $9.95 combo box, which gets you any two sandwiches, plus salad and some pretty kick-ass homemade shrimp chips. Dumplings, pancake rolls and noodles round out the menu, but you're not really here for those, are ya?

GREAT sandwiches at great prices. I'm so happy Mantao has joined the list of midtown food options. I highly recommend the spicy tofu sandwich.
