The concept behind the elegant but unpretentious Anissa, Arabic for "woman", was to emphasize the female perspective—the place is run by women, and the 100 or so wines are from female-run vineyards. But it is chef and co-partner Anita Lo (with stints at Bouley, Chanterelle and on Iron Chef America) and her contemporary American cooking who has emerged as the central draw at this intimate and sophisticated West Village eatery. The menu is subtle, creative and seasonal, with Asian influences like pig's feet, schezuan peppercorn and miso making its way into pan roasted farm chicken, grilled Australian lamb tenderloin and marinated sable. The chef's tasting menu and excellent wine pairing will not disappoint.
