Lula's Sweet Apothecary
- Neighborhood: East Village
- 516 E. Sixth St.
- New York, NY 10009
- Price range: $ (Under $9)
Though the East Village may be sated with a glut of dessert spots, vegans with a serious sweet tooth will appreciate this old-school ice cream parlor that serves all-natural, homemade vegan ice cream in a roster of rotating flavors. In the spirit of old-fashioned ice cream counters located inside the corner drug store, toppings such as coconut, sprinkles and gelatin-free gummy bears are scooped from glass jars, shakes and malts are blended with Hamilton Beach hand-mixers, and sundaes and banana splits are best enjoyed sitting on a swivel stool. In addition to Chicago Soy Dairy soft-serve, other imports include vegan cakes and cookies from Brooklyn-based Red Mango Bakery, wheat-, gluten- and dairy-free brownies, blondies and fruit pies from Gone Pie and fair trade coffee, teas and hot chocolate. While vegan desserts are nothing new to the city, where else can you get a New York egg cream made with neither egg nor cream? And no, it’s not made with air, but rather seltzer, rice or soymilk and chocolate syrup.
