Like drummers who sing lead (Phil Collins, Don Henley, sometimes Levon Helm), this sweet shop is part of a new movement that brings the afterthought out to center stage. Unlike Pichet Ong's P*ong, Hali Horn's 28-seat West Village dessert spot eschews haute elegance for rich, old fashioned stick-yer-face-in-it goodness. There is a savory menu served all day—built around American classics like the BLT, chicken salad and shoestring fries—but desserts are the focus. There's an inside-out carrot cake, s'mores popsicles, beignets and the signature brownie/ice-cream mudpie. The Birch Beer Float is in a category all its own.

Had the gooey grilled cheese, mudpie and mudslider. Everything was really good. Nice place to take a date or kids.
