No matter how many times they renovate this place, it
remains the same—essentially a diner with an East European cast.
Opened in 1954, Veselka offers American favorites like mac-and-cheese,
sandwiches and burgers, but is truly known for ethnic specialties like
borscht, pierogies, stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes and blintzes. During the day, the place is bright and cheerful and in good weather, tables line the sidewalk.
There's a classic diner counter up front and tables in the back beneath a mural painted by a longtime patron. The clientele has changed along with the neighborhood—while you'll still find some older European regulars, most of the tables are crammed with students, hipster-types and new neighborhood folk—especially late night. The other big draw: all-day breakfast, so if you didn't go to bed until morning, you can get an eye-opener late in the afternoon.
