Sushi Uo
As if the LES apartment market wasn't tough enough already! Pseudo-hidden nouveau raw fish spot Sushi Uo opened its (unmarked) second-floor location in what was once a residential space, snatching yet another prospective home off the market. After a gut-renovation job that would make Ty Pennington proud, the sleek, narrow dining room features a modern black-and-white motif and a roomy sushi bar. The bar is the best spot for watching sushi chef David Bouhadana—who trained under a sushi master in Japan before working at Morimoto—ply his trade. For $44, he'll create an omakase "chef's special" platter of the day's best offerings just for you. For the less adventurous, the classic spicy tuna roll and mackerel sashimi are accounted for, but Bouhadana fills out the menu with outside-the-bento-box surprises like a hamachi carpaccio featuring white truffle oil and boneless short ribs in a roasted-fennel beer braise.
