Inside the harshly lit shop, teenagers are wolfing down greasy slices cut from a stack of warming pizzas. Every few minutes, cooks pull a new pie from the oven, ensuring continual freshness. I make my move—only to be cut off by an overeager senior.
“Two slices,” she says, peeling off two crumpled bills.
I shoot her daggers. She shuffles off, clutching her slices, while I order mine. It’s presented on a paper plate, steam still rising.
