Brooklyn's Sunset Park is a low-cost melting pot: Fifth Avenue is loaded with Latin American eats like tortas and tacos, while Seventh and Eighth Avenues contain Chinese and Vietnamese vittles. There's a delicious contrast of cuisines, sold in greasy street carts and spic-and-span restaurants alike.
Despite the disparate foods, this split-personality neighborhood shares one thing: a commitment to one-dollar cuisine. Rising prices, however, could soon put the kibosh on that. I begin my quest for the best single-buck foods one sunny Saturday, on a stretch of low-rise Eighth Avenue.
