Laura O’Neil and Ben Van Leeuwen | Van Leeuwen Ice Cream
June 23, 2009
What is one foodstuff that just cannot be grilled, exacted from personal experience?
Ben Van Leeuwen: Avocado. It just burns.
What’s the ice cream flavor of 2009?
Ben: Earl Grey tea, made with ancient black tea. It’s actually one of the oldest ice cream flavors.
So I read a reader email on Eater calling you a "parasite truck." What?
Laura O’Neil: I think that was saying that if we were hawking in the vicinity of an ice cream parlor, we were a parasite. I know what a parasite is, and we are not a parasite.
So it was not a calculated move, to set up near competition?
Laura: It’s a busy location and you will always find ice cream where there are people. We live in Greenpoint, so it’s natural for us to go to Bedford Avenue.
Ben: And we know the folks over at Penny Licks. They are doing great.
What other people are saying...

Penny Licks is a vegan ice cream parlour, no? So they wouldn't necessarily cater to the same crowd.
