Bar Americain
This Bobby Flay joint tries to fool you with a sweeping brasserie design, but the menu—inspired by Flay’s cross-country trips with the Food Network—has Americana written all over it.
Proud to be an American?
Bar Americain (152 W. 52nd St.) “celebrates regional American cooking” with dishes like buttermilk fried chicken and cedar-planked Pacific salmon. And anyone who’s road-tripped to the Kentucky Derby will salivate at the sight of Flay’s take on the Kentucky hot brown sandwich. The turkey, bacon, tomato and cheese sauce are all there, but this unorthodox version employs two slices of French toast in place of the traditional white bread.
Spangled-star rating: 4
American regional food deserves props, but smoked chipotle mayonnaise with the fries? “Pulp Fiction”’s Jules Winfield would not approve.
