Oscar’s American Brasserie

While Oscar’s (301 Park Ave.) is on the informal end of the venerable Waldorf-Astoria Hotel’s eating options, steep lunch prices (sandwiches: $20 and up) may give frugal diners heartburn.
Proud to be an American?
Attracting mostly hotel guests and other out-of-towners looking for some New York history, this breakfast and lunch spot is named for legendary Waldorf maitre d’ Oscar Tschirky. Tschirky is credited with inventing two American classics: the Waldorf salad and veal Oscar (asparagus, crab cake and tarragon vinaigrette), both available at this namesake restaurant.
Spangled-star rating: 4
It’s named for a national culinary hero and features his signature dishes, but the steep prices feel a bit un-American.
