After about two years serving modern European fare in a stark blanc dining room, Bar Blanc has added some cozy design touches, more small plates, a focus on American fare and a "Bistro" to the end of its name. The spot started with Cesar Ramirez, a Bouley acolyte, running the kitchen, but Sebastiaan Zijp took the helm midstream. Now Zijp has reimagined the menu, offering a wider selection of small plates like macaroni cheese au gratin and white bean-and olive tapenade crostini, most under ten bucks. The entrees—slow-roasted pork loin, seared black cod—still run in the high $20s, but co-owner Kiwon Standen emphasizes the flexibility of the new menu with "more options at a lower price point," and the softer aesthetic with a "more casual, cozy feel." In a time when people are turning to old comforts, this seems like a much better bet.
