Tucked away on a corner of Ditmars Blvd.'s burgeoning restaurant row, 718 - named for the Astoria area code - is the culinary baby of ex-pat Raphael Sutter. His menu mixes traditional French cuisine (emphasis on his Alsatian region) and Spanish to form a delightfully fresh alternative to the neighborhood's eateries. Presentation and ambience are touted, though prices are not. 718’s tiny, dimly lit interiors (and, its summertime outdoor seating) mirror its chic but simple dishes. Appetizers like foie gras with mango chutney on toasted brioche or tuna tartare with tomato comfit stir the appetite for grilled meats or seafood. All goes well with a side of parsnip puree (with wild mushrooms and white truffle oil) or sautéed spinach. Lots of “flambéed” and “grilled” mains dominate the menu, though the best bargains are to be found at non-dinner hours: Lunch prix fixe entrees come with a glass of wine, soup du jour and coffee; brunch offers the likes of French toast and roasted apples, salad, or eggier concoctions with mimosa or bloody mary, an appetizer, and dessert – all for $22. Desserts, too, are not to be missed: The trio of crème brûlée is a tasty combo of vanilla, coffee, and chocolate custards, while the homemade chocolate and banana bread pudding is one of the best in town.
