The students have to practice on somebody, so savvy New Yorkers with a taste for French cooking head for this SoHo restaurant, where the cooking is done by undergraduates of the French Culinary Institute.
The dining room is simply decorated, but there are flowers on the tables, and the staff - students, too - are welcoming and efficient. The cooks are well-supervised, and the kitchen turns out terrific food for the price. The three-course lunch is a bargain at $20.02; the five-course dinner menu (served after 8 p.m.) is $29.95. There are also a la carte choices.
The menus change every six weeks or so (to keep the students moving through the course), but you can count on soups, pastas, chops, fish, and steaks.
