Prime Meats

- Price range: $$ ($9-$15)
The cocktail bar and restaurant extension of the Frankies empire is a notch up in relaxed, old-timey romantic ambiance (more candles, darker wood) but maintains the same friendly and excellent service. Stand at the bar or take a seat at one of the cozy, woodsy tables and booths, and order from a menu of strong and classic cocktails served in vintage glasses, like the Aviation, $10, made with gin, lemon juice, maraschino liqueur and back-from-the-dead creme de violette. Or opt for a handful of carefully curated beers on tap (all about $7) or a glass of red or white from the short but thoughtful wine list ($9-$11). And although Prime Meats started as a bar, it's transitioned slowly but surely into a full-blown and terrific dinner destination, serving a German-inflected menu that's delicious from top to bottom—even the $2 bread-and-butter plate, served with lingonberry jam, housemade butter and two kinds of breads, is far above average. The Vesper Brett plate of assorted cured meats may be the best charcuterie plate in all five boroughs—follow it with the rib eye or the choucroute platter if you're not afraid of a meat hangover.
Note: Drinkers who don't plan to order food are requested to stand at the bar, although the rule no longer applies after 10 p.m., and may not apply at all once the full dining room and adjacent open-air dining patio open.
