The 92nd Street Y's new Tribeca outpost is sure to throw tourists for a loop (just like 2nd Avenue Deli's new off–Third Avenue digs). But once befuddled visitors find their way, they'll be happy to discover a brand new on-site kosher café to ease their minds and fill their bellies. The 92YTribeca Cafe serves dairy kosher fair, but certainly not like Bubbie used to make. While you'll find a few throwbacks like potato and cauliflower pierogies, the bulk of the menu is centered on local, seasonal fare like braised fall vegetables with sautéed tofu, wild rice and toasted pumpkin seeds. Those looking for a quick nosh before or after the center's great art, theater and film programming may opt for a hummus plate or even a deviled egg "flight" (the wasabi yolk with black sesame seeds is fusion at its finest).
A full bar with micro brews on tap and a specialty cocktail list, plus live music on most nights, give the cafe's evenings a cosmopolitan feel. But for those still a bit disoriented by the dissonant name/location combo, we might suggest an offering from the "designated driver" menu like gourmet egg creams made with Belgian drinking chocolate.
