Campo

Campo is a sharp, sprawling trattoria outfitted with retro tintypes, a retro tin ceiling and a casual Italian menu that’s a bit throwback itself. Fresh pastas and pizzas seem to be the strengths—a fungi farfalle with truffle oil and a hearty boar Bolognese were solid in execution and proportion. But check the cracker-like grilled pizzas, honed by chef David Rotter—formerly of Gonzo. I tried the heirloom tomato and fried eggplant, both major victories. Crispy proscuitto (similar to a pancetta) crowned a diver scallop for a perfectly salty sweet bite. The crunchy bits would work great atop the pizza too. Fried green tomato caprese and a sharp Cesar salad (with ‘molten’ croutons) were standout starters.
