There’s certainly no shortage of Italian restaurants on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, yet this authentic old-school joint is still a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Perhaps it’s the absence of smoke and mirrors in its approach to classic Italian staples like fritto misto, straciatella and pasta e fagioli. Most pasta, like the fettuccine a la Bolognese, pappardelle with wild mushrooms, and cavatelli with pesto and artichokes, is homemade. Sure, you’ve probably never seen pan-seared filet of ostrich on a homey Italian menu before, no less in port wine and blueberry sauce (here it’s the house signature dish, Piatto Primo Atto), but amid a sea of competition, you have to make your mark somehow.
