ITALIAN. No matter how glitzy its neighbors get, this trattoria stays true to its roots. In a simple setting - polished floors, plain walls, vintage photographs, plain wooden tables - it serves the food of Emilia Romagna, a part of Italy that gets short shrift in the New York City restaurant world.
There are interesting appetizers, such as calzagotti (fried polenta, pancetta, tomatoes, and beans) or fried gnocchi. For main courses, there are enormous pork chops, roasted chicken, fish, and lamb. But the restaurant's biggest fans rave about the pastas: home-made tortelloni stuffed with pumpkin; tortellini with an unctuous cream sauce; old-fashioned tagliatelle with red sauce. The main event, though, is the lasagna, which has been called the best in the city. Desserts have their following, too. Tiramisu - that'90s fave - shows what all the fuss was about.
