Bored of the usual barking sandwich-shop workers ("Next! Next!") and overpriced chains ($9 sandwiches!) that dominate the Midtown lunch scene? Café Zest, the Grand Central area spot from the folks behind Japanese favorite Café Zaiya, is a breath of fresh air. Chipper, smiling workers make sandwiches to order and serve a range of cakes and pastries from the Japanese bakery Parisienne. Asian staples like udon salads, bento boxes and onigiri are fresh and reasonably priced, and pre-made sandwiches like curry chicken or white fish will set you back only $4.25. Grab your food to go, or catch some rays in the sunroof-lit back seating area with other Café Metro refugees.
