Cho Cho San
- Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
- 15 W. Eighth St.
- New York, NY 10011
- 212-473-3333
Named after the title role in Puccini's Nagasaki-set opera "Madame Butterfly" (Cio-Cio-San), this Japanese restaurant avoids melodrama and emotional histrionics. The space, on a revitalized Eighth Street and supported by a Met Opera director, is clean and tasteful, with a skylight, geisha drawings and lots of wood throughout (as in hardwood floors and pictures of tree branches). The best of the menu is straightforward sushi, with your standard eel and tunas complemented by the more interesting veggie rolls like the Natto (an organic fermented soybean roll) and special rolls like the Puccini (squid tempura stuffed with sushi rice, olives and shiso).
