A bright light among the more anonymous sushi spots that lurk in the shadows of the East Village, Hasaki serves pretty much straightforward sushi and Japanese dishes with a few unexpected dishes. The way to go, as most young downtown regulars who fill the unremarkable lower-level space do, is to order the Sushi Five. For a low price, it gives you a chef's choice of five pieces of fresh fish (including, sometimes, toro), a couple of rolls and a unique red miso soup to open. A Twilight Dinner boasts a bunch of tempura, or just order prime rib Japanese steak with sake suace or soba noodles a la carte.
