Building on the cream-puff craze they introduced to New York a few years ago, the Japanese chain behind Beard Papa is now also peddling udon. The 70-seat, two-floor noodle house in the former Cafe Zest spot in Midtown is the first stateside location of this Japanese udon house boasting a stiff udon special to the Kagawa Perfecture. The owners claim to be the first spot in the city to serve fresh udon, and to back it up they'll make and boil the noodles right in front of you before finishing things off in their secret broth flavored nine different ways, from a spicy curry to a cold bukkake udon. Come dinnertime, the menu grows to include kushikatsu: panko crusted meat on a stick, which at $2 each could rival any streetside kebab.
