JAPANESE. On a pretty tree-lined street in the West Village, Taka is a small, welcoming sushi place with a distinct style.
First: The chef. Female sushi chefs are rare finds, but Taka Yoneyama does more than prepare the food. She also designed the pretty plates it's served on.
The food itself is well-thought-out and inventive. Spicy lobster rolls and toro please the upscale crowd of neighborhood people who regularly make their way here for dinner. Tuna rolls decorated with tiny flakes of gold leaf may strike some as a little over-the-top, but they show off Yoneyama's quirky sensibility.
Note: The early-bird special (5-6 p.m.) is a bargain at $11.95.
