Empanada Joe's

- Price range: $ (Under $9)
Like falafel or Chinese dumplings, empanadas seem like the type of food that's best served in a less-than-polished atmosphere. In other words, a little grime—errr, charm—is the price you pay for the real stuff. Enter Empanada Joe's, the first of a planned mini-chain of New York "fast-er" food empanada joints. The upbeat, trendy feel is definitely more fro-yo spot than hole-in-the-wall, but the ingredients have the eco-conscious gourmet aspirations that New Yorker's prize. The shop promises that the empanadas are fresh, never frozen, and they're each cooked to order in a whiplash-inducing two minutes. The dough that encases fillings like beef, pulled pork, breakfast egg and cheese and even banana and chocolate for dessert is actually shipped in from Argentina to give these slick little edible pockets some authenticity.
