Union Square Greenmarket
- Union Square
- Broadway and 17th Street
- New York, NY
- Price range: $ (Under $9)
A direct pipeline from New York farmers to its residents, the Union Square Greenmarket is the biggest and best open-air farmer's market in the five boroughs. And within the three-square block radius stuffed with mostly-organic and all-local produce, there are two distinct worlds. The first is the wild weekend world (Saturdays), which finds thousands of people perusing for Vera's fresh-cut flowers, Breezy Hill Orchard apples and Buon Pane brick oven bread. The other, on weekdays (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), finds less regular folk and more top chefs, which can be more refined and rowdy—come crack-of-dawn early enough and you might see Butter's Alex Guarnaschelli and Trestle on Tenth's Ralf Kuettel jostling and elbowing each other for the best of Max Creek Hatchery's rainbow trout, Hawthorne Valley Farms' pork chops and spare ribs and Berryknoll farm tomatoes.
