The Spotted Pig
The pitch: New York’s first true “gastro-pub,” and still its best, The Spotted Pig serves impeccably executed comfort food in a casual setting.
The pedigree: Co-owned by chef April Bloomfield, formerly of River Café in London and Chez Panisse in Berkeley, and mega-restaurateur Ken Friedman. Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich are investors.
Signature dish: Chargrilled burger with Roquefort Cheese and shoestring potatoes ($17).
But how British it it, bloke? Very. Although it has a definite Italian lilt (ricotta gnudi, anyone?), that’s par for the course at the gastro-pubs that have been taking hold in and around London for the past decade.
The verdict: Critics generally admit that the cuisine is wonderful—“heroically satisfying,” as The Times' Frank Bruni puts it—although they gripe about the no-reservations policy, which after five years still causes epic waits.
