The breakfast sandwich
Why we like it: Eggs are the staple of any good breakfast, but as any New Yorker knows, it can be a wee bit challenging to eat an omelet on the way to work. Thankfully, the culinary gods invented the breakfast sandwich. Compact, easy to eat and mighty filling, it's the perfect food to hold in one hand while grabbing the handrail with the other.
Anywhere, U.S.A. (left): Breakfast emporium Dunkin' Donuts recently trumpeted its Bacon Lover's Supreme Omelet Sandwich ($4.51), featuring an egg and vegetable omelet on a croissant, topped with bacon and Colby Jack cheese.
New York, N.Y. (right): True, bacon makes everything taste better, but local quasi-chain 'wichcraft brightens up early mornings with its Onion Frittata Sandwich ($6.50) , loaded with oven-roasted tomatoes and gooey cheddar. You'll be eating in New York, but you may just think you're in Italy.
