Liquid Dinner at the '21' Club
This one’s for the oenophiles: Behind a massive 5,000-pound door in the basement of the storied ‘21’ Club that can only be unlocked by inserting an 18-inch meat skewer into a clandestine crack in the cement wall lies the restaurant’s collection of vintage wines— and those of its famous patrons, among them Aristotle Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor and Sammy Davis Jr.
Inside is also a private dining room, where you can toast your good fortune over a bottle of 1989 Montrachet “Marquis de Laguiche” J. Drouhin, which '21' Club wine director and sommelier Phil Pratt says “is arguably the best Montrachet going,” or 1990 Grands Echezeaux Domaine de la Romanee Conti, the texture and weight of which Pratt describes as “the most hedonistic of all wines—really sexy juice! The velvety weight of the fruit is incomparable.” Either way, these highly valued wines will run you $1,200 a pop— ironically you’ll have to shell out of pocket for the tax on this.
