Best Chef: New York City
March 23, 2009
When the nominations for Best NYC chef were announced on the JBA's breathless Twitter feed (@beardfoundation), we were sort of stunned. No John Fraser. No Michael White. No Scott Conant—though we was nominated later for Best New Restaurant. So who did make it in? Well, a lot of guys nominated last year, including Michael Anthony (Gramercy Tavern), Gabriel Kreuther (The Modern), Wylie Dufresne (WD-50, pictured) and the Beard's Susan Lucci Terrance Brennan (Picholine), his sixth nod. Prune's Gabrielle Hamilton is the ultimate wild card. A really curious pick.
Bloomberg critic Ryan Sutton summed up his general curiosity nicely—via Twitter, of course. "Absolutely aghast that Ryan Skeen was snubbed for a Beard Award. And why wasn't Convivio up there? It's much, much better than Scarpetta."
