Chef Eton Chan and his wife fell so in love with Hawaiian shaved ice while on their honeymoon, they hurried back to open their own tiny shaved-ice-and-dumpling spot in their Carroll Gardens neighborhood. Now, a year after opening Eton, the neighborhood fell so in love with Chan's shave ice that the former Café Gray charge has decided to open a second location, three blocks away. While the original will shift focus to hot items (year-round noodles, extended dumpling offerings), the new place is all about the ice ice baby, serving clever combinations like apple pie a la mode and banana crème pie. "It's like wet cotton candy in your mouth," says Chan of his frozen treat. He also plans to serve 18 varieties of bubble tea, including jackfruit, Thai coconut and watermelon. A "snow bubble tea" (quite possibly an NYC first) does exactly what it says. Chan will also sell his legendary dumpling (five for $3.50) to go, served cold, but made daily and not frozen.
