Mike’s Diner is a welcome sight at the end of the subway line tucked behind a neon-lit sign. Inside regulars huddle over hot mugs of coffee within worn, warm interiors. Being in Astoria, Greek fare is perfectly respectable: Standards like moussaka, spanakopita, and heaping bowlfuls of Greek salad rival any local joint. Skip those. It’s is the sandwiches and breakfast items you don’t want to miss. Eggs come omelet-style (broccoli, spinach, etc.), benedict-style or tucked into sandwiches. Waffles and pancakes, too, do nicely floating between scoops of nutty ice cream and or simply sharing the plate with sausage and grits. Late-night diners craving a bit of comfort will relish any of the hot-off-the-grill melts or burgers.
