To call this an Indian restaurant is a little misleading. In fact, the cooking is better described as New American with a strong Indian accent. Once again, Danny Meyer (Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern) has come up with an inventive menu served in stylish suroundings. The space is dramatic, with high ceilings and tall windows overlooking Madison Square Park. A staircase cuts the space, and jewel-like shades of green and coral glow beneath mellow lighting. The menu covers just about everything: New England seafood, heartland beef and pork chops, lamb, and chicken, all prepared with subtle Indian spicing. Downstairs, in the Bread Bar, diners looking for lighter meals can snack on small plates while sampling a designer cocktail or two. Bread Bar burgers—top-grade beef mixed with minced chilies—are served with potatoes mixed with bacon and the house's own spicy ketchup.
