Like the dearly departed Mo Pitkin's, UES joint Lansky's Old World Deli waxes nostalgic for the city's eateries of yore. Restaurateur and chef David Ruggerio (Sushi a Go Go) and his team are serving up a greatest hits of deli standbys like stuffed cabbage and hefty sandwiches featuring house-cured pastrami and corned beef. Patrons seem to favor the matzo ball soup, and manager Glen Young's seen a lot of "Nova Scotia salmon with sturgeon sandwiches and beef brisket with potato pancakes going out" of the open kitchen. Sleek booths combined with retro-chic wallpaper set Lansky's apart from Katz's classic understated dining room. But the Dr. Brown's sodas, egg creams and thick deli-style pickles (dished up by bowtied servers) should give local old-school deli fiends a reason to stick around the hood, while the garlicky, deep-fried hot dogs (with a choice of 14 toppings) should win over a new generation of converts.
