After earning fans in Switzerland and Israel, Euro-style sandwich shop Press has opened its first stateside outpost on Third Avenue. The shop's focus is on a handful of hot, pressed sandwich wraps with relatively simple ingredients like chicken breast, rib eye and eggplant with goat cheese. But owner Jimmy Schabtay insists the quality of the ingredients is what sets his food apart from other sandwich slingers: "Everything is fresh, and never frozen. Even the sauces are homemade—the freshness is very important." While the sandwiches, salads, fries and soups should convert a few local Subway fans, we're betting that the late-night hours (4 a.m. on weekends) will be an even stronger selling point for Murray Hill bar-hoppers looking to stave off a hangover with a bedtime snack.
