Doughboy
Giving nearby Magnolia Bakery a run for its sweet confections are Vanessa Perry Keefe and Alison Nelson (of Chocolate Bar). Though they're serving tea-time treats—cupcakes, brownies and slices of pie and cake—Keefe emphasizes that their bakery is "not girly in any sense." In fact, its namesake is the doughboy: a nickname for World War I soldiers, who have a memorial in nearby Abingdon Square Park. The military theme continues into the bakery, which is decked out in photos of soldiers. Grab a window-facing stool to attack a slice of banana bread or one of the irresistible cupcakes (in flavors like red velvet and Oreo cookie) and a cup of Mud coffee.
