The judges... judging
We always forget how much fun we have at Greenpoint's Red Star Bar—these guys give sports bars a good name. On Saturday, they hosted the second annual Best Wings in Brooklyn Competition, offering free wings and cheap, cold pitchers of beer. Many people lined up in the cold for more than two hours for a chance to sample and vote for Brooklyn's wing champ, but—as the crowd's messy faces and fingers proved—it was worth the wait.
Judges crowned Life Cafe 983 in Bushwick this year's winner for their classic hot-and-vinegary "Brutal" buffalo wings. Second place went to Bonnie's Grill in Park Slope, who also cranked out a classic wing. Third place went to last year's winner, Super Wing NY in Crown Heights, who simmered their wings in a fiery and buttery sauce.
Our informal poll left us very confused as everyone seemed to like everything! We thought newcomers Buffalo Boss had a unique spicy sweet sauce on their organic wings, served up by Jay Z's cousin. Those who liked their wings on the sweeter side praised Bean Post Pub's bourbon-and-honey-glazed version. But you couldn't go wrong with Rocky Sullivan's and The Kettle Black's wings, which we heard were laced with Irish whiskey for a little extra kick. Now that's winging it!
