Rise and shine! Amateurs and pros slug it out for brunch bragging rights.
Sunday brunch at Brooklyn's The Bell House was a smackdown, French toast style, as 20 teams gathered to duke it out for best brunch in show. Bloody Marys were poured, eggs were broken, and ballots were cast for the winning bites.
Nick Suarez and Theo Peck of The Food Experiments are the minds behind this ongoing—and successful—cookoff series. For this gathering, they wanted to out-omelette themselves. The spirited teams went to the mat with brunchtime goodies like quiche, duck confit doughnuts, pork-hash tamales, bread pudding and even a little booze.
Judges Andrew Knowlton of Bon Appetite magazine, Sean Rembold of Marlow & Sons, and Emile Castillo of Le Parker Meridien awarded the judges' prize to team Wanna Spoon? for their bacon-sprinkled breakfast cupcakes. The coveted people's choice award, on the hand, went to team Righteous Burn for their Righteous Kentucky: a combo of pork sausage, bourbon and butter served in a breakfast bun. Indeed, it was a smackdown to the bloody (mary) end! —James Mulcahy
