Cook Out NYC
After a year of figuring out the logistical challenges of throwing food events on Governors Island, Cook Out NYC and Jimmy Carbone (Jimmy's No. 43) brought home the win for the best-run food event we've ever taken a ferry for. The hot and sunny weekend afternoon was full of pulled pork, smoked brisket, exotic hot dogs and fancy sliders. No line was too long, and, more important, the Sixpoint beer never ran out. Guests also had the chance to participate in a silly summertime eating contest: a Kimchipalooza. Yes, exactly what it sounds like—the person who finished the most Mama O's kimchi in three minutes got to take home a pretty sweet trophy, Pepto-Bismol not included.
The guys from Fatty 'Cue kept their lines moving with grilled baguettes soaked in pure garlic deliciousness and filled with juicy brisket. Sam Barbieri and the Fuhgeddaboutit crew (aka Waterfront Ale House) had a never-ending supply of tangy, melt-in-your-mouth barbecued pulled pork. One of the longest lines of the day was for carnitas from The Carnitas Shack. Was it was worth the wait? "We don't know," said someone in line whom we asked. "We just saw the line and figured it must be good!" King Phojanakong of Kuma Inn was one of the first to run out of food, but after telling us he served up 160 pounds of pork belly, we can forgive him. The best part: Everyone's holding their bellies for a good cause, with part of the profits benefiting Just Food's Farm School.
