A mash-up of bites and beats from James Murphy, Wylie Dufresne, more.
On Saturday night, as the Feast of San Genarro was raging on Mulberry Street, a block away on Elizabeth, Anna Polonsky and Emilie Papatheodorou held an intimate "campfire" party to kick off Le Grand Fooding's New York bash this year. A trio of inventive chefs teamed up with ultra-trendy musicians for an al fresco feast under the stars—and, of course, with a campfire.
Wylie Dufresne of wd-50 grilled succulent, root beer glazed ribs with DJs Andrew and Andrew. Chef Inaki Aizpitarte came in from Le Chateaubriand in Paris and teamed up with New York's ultimate hipster-hero James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. They served an addictive beef and chive salad, tender slices of beef with a raw salsa of chives and sesame seeds. We asked Murphy what his contribution to the dish was: "I cut and juiced lemons, I chopped chives," he said. "Labor, that was my contribution."
And fried chicken wunderkind Dante Gonzales of Dante's Fried Chicken in L.A. got some help from Muhsinah. Together they served crispy drumettes with apricot "crack sauce," which guests washed down with Sasha Petraske (Milk & Honey) and Richie Boccato's (Dutch Kills) Jameson cocktails. The soundtrack for the evening was provided by Murphy's LCD bandmate Nancy Whang on the turntables, and Norwegian crooner Sondre Lerche serenaded the crowd on picnic blankets. We can't wait for Le Grand Fooding's 52-hour dinner party next weekend!
