Get in the mood with bargain bivalves. How low? $1 a pop. Sexy!
When we “consider the oyster,” as M.F.K. Fisher implored us to do, it’s hard not to consider the cost. While that briny bundle of sea-bred seduction slides down your palate, the only sound may be a cash register’s ka-ching! echoing through your head.
Before you protest that your budget runs more ramen than raw bar, oyster-grubbing in New York has a longstanding tradition of abundance and affordability. Early settlers consumed bivalves voraciously, thanks to copious beds surrounding lower Manhattan. Over-harvesting caused supplies to dwindle, and by the early 20th century the food was more the luxury it is today.
Still, there are great deals out there—you just gotta know where to look. We've rounded up the choicest bivalve bargains around town, singling out the ones that will cost you just a buck, and highlighting drink specials when they're available. Read on and decide for yourself which deals you’ll want to cough up the clams for.
