The Ten Bells
It's hard not to be charmed by this Lower East Side wine bar, which pimps out organic, natural and biodynamic vino, as well as a menu of small plates. With its dark tin ceiling, chalkboard menus and unmarked entrance, Ten Bells feels like an under-the-radar discovery hidden behind antique steel doors.
The deal: Every day until 7 p.m., the week's selection of two oysters (everything from Malpeques to Kumamotos) go for $1 each, or $2 thereafter.
The scene: You'll encounter surprisingly little competition for the early-evening bargain mollusks. Sidle up to the wraparound, marble-topped bar to do your slurping, or camp out at one of the spot's long wooden tables. If you're looking for a wine pairing, the knowledgeable proprietors are happy to pour samples from their extensive cache of all-natural wines.
Worth shelling out for? For oysters, this is one of the city's best deals. There's no special on drinks, though, and it's easy to down a few glasses of something without realizing it runs $12 a pop. Be vigilant or you might end up with an hefty tab—and the need to visit an ATM, as the spot is cash-only.
