As American as apple pie, but with a twist. Think grapefruit. Or coconut. Or pretzels.
Before there was pie, there was “pye”—the savory medieval English version of pastry stuffed with tender meats like duck, chicken and even pigeon. Eventually, these meat pies traveled with the Pilgrims and landed in America. Now, when we think of pies, we think of pumpkin at Thanksgiving, berry in the summer, and apple…well, all the time.
Though apple pie didn’t originate in America, we still think of it as an American specialty. These days, though, pastry shops and restaurants are switching things up with quirky twists on this American dessert classic. Why settle for plain ol' apple when you've got grapefruit? Or salted caramel? Or coconut?
