Gorging on lotsa fatty ‘cue, pies and thighs at a gut-busting Brooklyn benefit
"When I first moved here, I carried a length of chain in my pocket. These days, everyone in this neighborhood really acts like a community, and we just feel like we're cooking for our friends," explained Diner/ Marlow and Sons chef Sean Rembold as he doled out chicken liver and pickled ramp crostini at the Taste of Williamsburg and Greenpoint.
And it's true: this chunk of Brooklyn is really a culinary jackpot, with the nabe's heavy hitters coming out to play for the hungry, tatted-up crowds. In addition to Diner and Marlow, newbies Fatty ‘Cue, Pies ‘n Thighs, and Manhattan Inn joined neighborhood standards Dumont, Aurora, and Dressler. At least two booths (Fatty ‘Cue and Teddy's Bar & Grill) roasted entire animals (goat and pig, respectively) on the street, and co-sponsor Brooklyn Brewery poured the suds straight from their own taps. Standout booths included Fatty's roasted goat with green chili sauce (which sold out early in the day), lobster salad crostini from Walter Foods, and old-school Polish peirogi and kielbasa from Karczma.
The event, a benefit to build the Northside Town Hall, was packed from start to finish. At the end of the day, Pies ‘n Thighs co-owner Sarah Buck summed it nicely when she said, "We're just glad no one gave up on us-we didn't want to do this anywhere but Williamsburg."
