STEAK. Even though they expanded into the space next door, you'll wait for a table (unless you have plenty of time to spare at lunch, this can be a problem). Up front, the small bar is busy with guys in suits, and the clubby, wood-paneled dining room is crowded with them, too.

What draws them are the steaks - among the best the city has to offer: juicy filet mignon, porterhouse, and sliced steak bordelaise. There are thick pork chops and meaty veal chops, and for those who don't like meat, mammoth broiled lobsters. Sides are the usual steakhouse choices, although the spinach comes steamed instead of creamed.

Service is steakhouse-style, which means it can be brusque. These guys know their jobs, though, and most of them have been with the restaurant for years. The wine list is said to be among the most extensive in Manhattan, and there are plenty of affordable choices.

Although the meat is justly famous, the restaurant is probably best known as the place where mobsters caught up with Paul Castellano and shot him outside, ushering in the era of the Dapper Don.
