Arunee is deservedly popular, and you may find yourself sitting on one of the two outdoor chairs that are thoughtfully provided for smokers and those waiting for a table. It's worth the wait.
Begin, perhaps, with hoy ob mor din, fresh, gritless mussels steamed in a fragrant broth suffused with lemongrass. Satay, whether you choose beef or chicken, is well-marinated, served with a vibrant peanut sauce. Chicken wings, boned and stuffed with vermicelli noodles, onions, and pork, are not to be missed. Shrimp salad with a breathtakingly spicy sauce, papaya salad with long beans, and grilled eggplant with shrimp, squid, and chicken are all winners from the salad list. Equally good are spicy beef with sweet and sour sauce and hunks of barbecued steak with a spicy sauce. Fiery ground pork salad, known as larb, is truly authentic, served with crisp fried pork skins. And here, the pad Thai, which can be overly sweet elsewhere, was top-notch.
And then there are the soups: tom yum goong, shrimp and straw mushroom soup zesty with chile, lime juice, and lemongrass; and tom kha gai, chicken with rich, smooth coconut milk; and also an excellent coconut-shrimp soup. And don't forget the refreshing desserts: tartly delicious mango ice cream, pumpkin custard, and irresistible, mildly sweet jellied coconut.
