After passing through a gauntlet of belligerent community activists, liquor-license brouhahas and a high-profile chef layoff, this embattled Chelsea transplant finally soft-opens in Soho. Last spring, the restaurant finally seemed back on track, but it abruptly axed its then–chef, “Top Chef” castoff Dave Martin. Why the split? “After a while, it was clear that we were not in the same place,” says co-owner Lola-Gayle Patrick-Odeen. “I think that David is a terrific chef with lots of potential, and I hope that people have the opportunity to taste his cuisine soon.” Stepping in for Martin is Le Cirque–trained Jennifer Printz, who has updated Lola’s much-beloved staples—fried chicken, ribs, onion rings—to deliver what Patrick-Odeen calls “French-interpreted Cajun-Creole cuisine” with a sophisticated flair.
