East Villagers of yore may miss the shoe store David Z and the helpful staff for trying on footwear. Well, at least that sense of education isn't gone forever. Now that this elongated storefront is Pho 32 & Shabu—the newest in the nexus of St. Mark’s Place noodleries and one that's open 24 hours, ha!—some very cheeky videos play overhead that show how to prep a hot pot and roll a wrap. Off-screen, and as the fifth installment in the Pho 32 chain, things are down to a science, like shabu shabu stoves in the tables. More than gastronomic gimmickry or the obligatory open-faced-brick décor, Pho's focus is on outflanks the faux pho shops that dot the rest of the Village. Pho with brisket, flank, soft tendon and tripe, for example, does the trick. And the Shabu Shabu is shabtacular, especially small octopus with a fish ball or cuttle fish cake as a side.
