Get bootiful at Screaming Mimi's

Shopping at a Halloween superstore can feel like a bad acid trip: kids running around in superhero costumes, chicks squeezing into latex nurse pieces and dudes trying to work that gangster look. Not to mention long lines and an exasperated staff. This Halloween, skip the insanity by going to these vintage boutiques for an original outfit that you won't want to throw out come Nov. 1.

Screaming Mimi's
Spanning multiple decades of style, Screaming Mimi’s offers the Halloween shopper plenty of options. Our favorite is a '90s rack where you can relive your grunge days. They’ve also stocked up on costume-related accessories, from oversize glasses to stethoscopes. But if you still can’t find what you’re looking for, check out the super Halloween shops down the corner.

Reminiscence
Long a Village staple, Reminiscence is known for its wacky and varied selection of threads (think glittery disco outfits, Hawaiian shirts and feather boas). Although some of the merch is a little worn, the prices are more than affordable. So if you can't decide between a disco-diva dress or a flapper ensemble, you can just buy both.

Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show
In town this weekend, the Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show has over 80 vintage clothing and textile dealers, making this event an ideal place to create a fun Halloween look. Draw inspiration from its special exhibit, “Shanghai Girl Gets All Dressed Up.” Named after Beverly Jackson’s new book, this exhibit showcases over a dozen pieces from Jackson’s personal collection. Just beware that the change rooms are rather small and communal.

Allan and Suzi
This uptown shop’s not only a vintage lovers dream, but a goldmine for Halloween inspirations. From Marilyn frocks to Travolta suits, Allan and Suzi’s retro threads will have you looking sharp this Pagan holiday.

Beacon’s Closet
Short on cash? At Beacon's Closet, trade last year's cowboy get-up for a Russell Simmons jogging suit. If you’re too lazy to venture to either of their locations, shop online at beaconscloset.com.
